Using Ritual to Cultivate Bodhicitta

From Croydon Buddhist Centre on Mon, 2 May, 2016 - 01:00
This talk is the first in our theme of "Transforming Self and World", in which we will be exploring how ritual can help us put the conditions in place through which bodhicitta may arise. Vijayasri explores our reactions to the idea of ritual and how rituals can become meaningless. We then look at the concept of ritual as "entering into a realm of the imagination where we encounter Buddhas and Bodhisattvas". Vijayasri starts to unfold a map of our seven-fold puja using the Bodhicaryavatara, and we focus on the Worship section of the Puja through the idea of Mandarava. The session ends with the Avalokitesvara mantra. This talk was given at the Croydon Buddhist Centre in April 2016 as part of our regular Saturday morning sangha class.

From Shabda Articles on Sat, 30 Apr, 2016 - 19:34

The “seven papers” have communicated a host of norms: of practice, doctrine and behaviour within the Order. We could call this the “rhetoric”. And yet inevitably there will be areas where, for many of us, our “lived reality” diverges from some of the “rhetoric”. This probably introduces a tension.

To what extent is that tension helpful or harmful? By modeling the Order as a social mandala, I explore the dynamics of these inescapable tensions. I suggest ways of addressing them, both through...

From London Buddhist Centre on Wed, 27 Apr, 2016 - 11:32

Last week I led a rewilding retreat in the Scottish Highlands, a new collaboration between the London Buddhist Centre and the charity Trees for Life.

The degrading of nature and our loss of meaningful participation in its cycles is closely connected to the stunting of our feeling and imagination for what life is and could be. So on this retreat I...
