Day 4 at the ECA

From European Chairs' Assembly on Sun, 16 Aug, 2015 - 22:19

The sun is shining on Adhisthana and we’ve been considering the future of fundraising in Triratna: creating a stronger culture of giving worldwide, so that all the core institutions, services and people on which Triratna’s life depends worldwide (for example, the College of Public Preceptors - responsible for ordinations - Clear Vision, Free Buddhist Audio and Windhorse Publications) are better resourced.

Afternoons are a mix of free time, special interest groups and business. Amongst many other things this afternoon saw a gathering of the...

Enormous boost for Triratna translations

From Triratna News on Sat, 15 Aug, 2015 - 21:32

It’s a strange but common experience to enter a Triratna Buddhist Centre bookshop in Spain, Finland or Belgium - and many other non-English-speaking countries - and see rows of Triratna books in English, alongside – maybe – a few in the local language.

It can be a big enough step to enter a Buddhist Centre. Who needs a language barrier too?

As you’ll know, we’re raising £100,000 for Sangharakshita’s 90th birthday, to fund the publication of his Complete Works over the next 5-7 years. This...

Day 3 at the ECA

From European Chairs' Assembly on Sat, 15 Aug, 2015 - 21:16

Today the European Chairs continued their exploration of the culture of Triratna centres, with discussion groups about yesterday’s talk on Triratna’s Six Distinctive Emphases, followed by the presentation of a consultation document setting out defining characteristics of a Triratna centre and principles underlying its running.

There is broad willingness to ensure that the interpretation and application of the Six Emphases continues to evolve according to the needs of new generations of Buddhists.

The afternoon break saw many of us taking walks and naps or...

Day 2 at the ECA

From European Chairs' Assembly on Fri, 14 Aug, 2015 - 22:34

As always, the ECA day began with double meditation followed by porridge!

We are around 40 women and men (the number of women has been going steadily up for several years) with a couple of guests from Australia, and the Development Team employed by the ECA to provide year-round services to all Centres, such as fundraising and communications. We also have with us visitors from other Triratna groupings such as the Public Preceptors, to ensure good communication and networking.

Having spent yesterday reconnecting in...

Birthday collection reaches £80,000

From Triratna News on Fri, 14 Aug, 2015 - 09:01

Congratulations! Today the worldwide collection for Sangharakshita’s 90th birthday passed the £80,000 mark, with 402 online donations from individuals and groups within Triratna. Help us reach our target: £100,000.

To give you more detail: the money will fund a 5-7-year project to publish Bhante’s Complete Works, including much material out of print or never published before, and in paper and digital, searchable, formats.

The editors, Kalyanaprabha and Vidyadevi, are already working on the early stages of the project, dividing his work into “baskets”....

51 years since Bhante's return from India

From Sangharakshita@90 on Thu, 13 Aug, 2015 - 08:53

Fifty one years ago yesterday (12th August 1964), Sangharakshita moved into the Hampstead Buddhist Vihara in north London, having returned from 20 years in India.

You can read about this period of his life in the volume of memoirs Moving against the Stream: the Birth of a new Buddhist Movement.

Celebrate Bhante’s long and varied life by making a donation for his 90th birthday project: his complete works, to be published online and on paper, for everyone, for ever.

Just £23,000 to go! By...
