Meditation: An Introduction

From Portsmouth Buddhist Center on Tue, 1 Oct, 2013 - 12:41Our next Introductory Meditation Workshop will be held on Saturday, October 26th.

In our introductory workshops we teach two traditional Buddhist meditations - the Mindfulness of Breathing and the Metta Bhavana, or Cultivation of Loving Kindness. Both practices provide a foundation in how to work effectively with your mind, teaching you how to concentrate, become less distracted, calmer and more emotionally positive. Suitable for everyone, you do not need to be a Buddhist to benefit greatly from these meditation...

Two Videos From Suvarnaprabha's Funeral

From San Francisco Buddhist Center on Mon, 30 Sep, 2013 - 21:17
Two video fragments from the funeral. Raymond Carver’s ‘Late Fragment’ read by Padmatara and the final sadhus. The sound on the poem is quite hard to make out, here are the words:

Late Fragment
And did you get what
you wanted from this life, even so?
I did.
And what did you want?
To call myself beloved, to feel myself
beloved on the earth.

Tasting Fear

From Free Buddhist Audio on Mon, 30 Sep, 2013 - 13:23
Today’s FBA Dharmabyte, “Tasting Fear,” by Kulaprabha is an an excerpt from the talk “Spiritual Death, Fear and Fearlessness.” Spiritual Death is about death of our fixed, bounded self, the self that is made up of bundled habits and preferences and views – especially views about existence and non-existence. So don’t be surprised if, when contemplating the impermanence and unreliability of that small self, you taste fear. It’s natural enough in the circumstances. After all,...

Suvarnaprabha's Burial At Fernwood

Suvarnaprabha's Burial At Fernwood

From San Francisco Buddhist Center on Sat, 28 Sep, 2013 - 13:55
It was a golden radiant day on that hillside. The children’s voices from the playground rang up from the valley and the canopy of eucalyptus shimmered in the breeze. After we shoveled the dirt and laid down our flowers 5 hawks circled above in the dazzling blue sky, then each flew off in a different direction. Driving home the bay sparkled. Golden. Radiant.

Suvarnaprabha Sangha Memorial Singalong

From San Francisco Buddhist Center on Thu, 26 Sep, 2013 - 20:53
The SP fan club! We gathered in large numbers Wednesday night, September 25th, at the San Francisco Buddhist Center to mark Suvarnaprabha’s death and support her and those who knew her in this transition time.

At one point we watched the video of Suvarnaprabha reading poetry at the 2011 convention. Towards the end, she looks up and says, “God that went really fast, didn’t it?”

The video ends with her singing a few lines from...

Dayanandi Reflects on "The Symbolism of Tara"

From Free Buddhist Audio on Thu, 26 Sep, 2013 - 17:09We recently reported that an old cassette copy of Dayanandi’s talk “The Symbolism of Tara,” one of the many talks not yet digitized and online at Free Buddhist Audio, was discovered by a mitra at Dharmagiri Retreat Centre in Sweden. The audio includes a talk and a beautiful invocation given at Taraloka - important both as a historic record of Taraloka and as one of the earliest talks given by a female Order member. Realizing it was...
