Death is Certain, and Other Points of Freedom

From Free Buddhist Audio on Sun, 3 Nov, 2013 - 02:22We rolled out some esoteric talks through the rest of October, giving space for reflection on Padmasambhava, the great guru of Tibet, including a ‘long-lost talk’ by Sangharakshita given at the London Buddhist Center in 1979 along with sprinkles of death, change and compassion.

Compassion: An Intrinsic Part of Reality

From Free Buddhist Audio on Sun, 3 Nov, 2013 - 01:49
Today’s FBA Dharmabyte, “Compassion: An Intrinsic Part of Reality,” by Vijayamala is an excerpt from an excellent, personal set of reflections entitled “Compassionate Koans – the Heart of the Matter”. Here she shares her thoughts on compassion as an intrinsic part of reality referring to Mandarava in ‘The Life and Liberation of Padmasambhava’ and describing how Bodhisattvas, messengers of the Dharma and embodiments of compassion, continue to suffer for lifetimes.

Here is the Karaniya Metta sutta (the Buddha’s words on loving-kindness) in Pali (an ancient Indian language for which I’m afraid I’ve lost some of the diacritics), followed by an English translation by Ratnaprabha. This is a version for easy printing - you can also read and listen along here!

Listen to Natalie’s talk about the sutta, and here’s Joe’s chanting of the Pali as a separate audio post.

The Himalayas, 1950s - links to Triratna tradition

From Lights In The Sky on Thu, 31 Oct, 2013 - 17:28BACKGROUND is a 42 minute film I made with Ratnaketu in the style of a pilgrimage to the hermitages and monasteries of Kalimpong, Darjeeling and Sikkim assoiated with Urgyen Sangharakshita, the TBC’s founder, and his principal teachers, Tibetan, Indian and Chinese. A beautiful Himalayan peak, Khangchendzonga, overlooked a resurgence of Buddhism, rather ironically first in the ‘West’ and then the ‘East’.

Urgyen Sangharakshita's vision for the world

From Lights In The Sky on Thu, 31 Oct, 2013 - 15:15TO SET THE scene, here is a quotation from a film made by Bob Mullan (The Enlightened Englishman, 1989)

Subsequent pages talk about the films I and my team have made about Triratna: its beginnings in the 1960s through to the new century.

I hope you will enjoy looking through this window as much as I have looking through the lens. Lights’ films have been remastered and filed over at LightsintheSky.org. Metta, Suryaprabha
