Touching a Mystery
Led by the Adhisthana Teaching Community

‘There are moments when criticism of a particular kind – the only kind I care for – utterly absorbs me. I feel I am touching a mystery … a darkness that is secretly alive and thrilling to the sense. This, I like to believe, is the reflection in myself of the darkness which broods over the poet’s creative mind.’
John Middleton Murry

From Buddhist Centre Features on Fri, 10 Feb, 2023 - 21:39

A real beauty of a ‘lost’ episode from our archives! Recorded in a very lovely garden in Mexico in 2019, with nature sounds all around, Bodhikamala and Sanghadhara, who’ve been soul mates of a sort since before the age of 10, explore with us their long history of friendship as young people. A shared love of the arts, of musicals, and Harry Potter brought them together in summer camp and, eventually, led them to explore Buddhism together. Now as ordained...

FBA Podcast: Reflections From the Bodhicaryavatara

From Free Buddhist Audio on Fri, 10 Feb, 2023 - 22:32

Jvalamalini offers suggestions to bear in mind when reading the Bodhicaryavatara, and a few reflections from the text on how to regard self and others.

“In the same way that the hands and other limbs are loved because they form part of the body, why are embodied creatures not likewise loved because they form part of the universe?”

“‘If I give, what shall I enjoy?’ Such concern for one’s own welfare is fiendish. ‘If I enjoy, what shall I give?’ Such concern...

From Birmingham Buddhist Centre on Fri, 10 Feb, 2023 - 00:00
In this sangha night talk, Maitrisara introduces the sangha night theme for the year: Transforming self and World. Reflections on how we approach the challenges of the world in a skilful way and with and Buddhist perspective, and finally introducing some of the various ways in which the theme will be evoked during the course of the year.

Self-Power and Other-Power in the Dharma life: Shinran, the Buddha and Bhante OM

From Taraloka Retreat Centre on Thu, 9 Feb, 2023 - 15:38

This long weekend for Order Members is an opportunity to connect with each other around our interest in Shinran, and explore the theme further through presentations, personal talks, discussion groups, ritual and meditation.  It’s not at Taraloka but Adhisthana.  Maitrisiddhi (from Taraloka) and Priyavadita (definitely not from Taraloka!) are co-ordinating it.

Friday 10 – Monday 13 November 2023

What we’ll explore:

When is it helpful to think of practising the Dharma in terms of ‘me making an effort’?  And when could we simply open more fully to...

Dharmabytes: One Moment Of Anger

From Free Buddhist Audio on Thu, 9 Feb, 2023 - 06:00

The Bodhicaryavatara is an 8th century text written by Shantideva, a Buddhist monk from the monastic ‘university’ at Nalanda, India. Dhammadinna offers a few thoughts on the Perfection of Patience, differentiating between types of anger and noting that Shantideva is referring to the sort of anger that is retaliatory and unskilful.

Excerpted from the talk Some Thoughts on the Bodhicaryavatara given at Taraloka Retreat Centre, 2008.
