Week Four: Ugliness and the Gateway of Beauty

From Cambridge Buddhist Centre on Thu, 29 Jan, 2026 - 00:00
Sangharakshita said that “Enlightenment is experienced and described as pure beauty, a beauty that may be experienced through all things, and to which all living beings are drawn”. Is there a path of beauty to the deeper reality of enlightenment?

The Honeyball Sutta

From Sheffield Buddhist Centre on Wed, 28 Jan, 2026 - 00:00
Join us to hear Vadanya tell the story of Dandapani, an opinionated old man who encounters the Buddha and receives a teaching about how our opinions can lead to conflict. Come and hear how the Dharma is a path to harmony and peace in the world. Very much a teaching for our times! What was The Buddha really like? We are told that the Buddha broke through into a radically different state of being, transcending ordinary human consciousness. What might it have been like to encounter that? There was something magnetic, awesome, mysterious, and powerful about The Buddha. Some people even ‘WOKE UP!’ just by being in his presence. During this series we will go on a journey, where we will glimpse The Buddha by imagining our way into some of the brilliant stories handed down to us - stories of an Enlightened Being interacting with the people he met. We’ll be asking ourselves, what we can learn about The Buddha from these stories…and we’ll attempt to bring some of those qualities into the situations and people that we encounter in our daily life.

Whilst these photos are no longer used in the HTML format of Shabda, I gather some Order members like to have them as a reference and a reminder.

Space in the Cambridge Women's Community

From Jobs, Volunteering & Communities on Fri, 23 Jan, 2026 - 11:06

There is a space in the Abbey House Women’s Community in Cambridge, and we (Amarachandra, Pasadanita, Rebecca and Sarvatajnana) are looking for a GFR Mitra or Order Member to join us.

We share the beautiful, listed building ‘The Old Abbey House’ with a men’s community next door. There are separate community living spaces and shared gardens, a lobby, and the laundry room.

Our community is ‘open,’ meaning we welcome friends, partners, sangha guests and visits from family, in balance with needs for quiet...
