Dharmabyte: A Single Slash of Anger

From Free Buddhist Audio on Thu, 17 Oct, 2019 - 14:00

Hatred or ill-will arises when something gets in the way of something we desire. From a mild irritation at being inconvenienced, to violent anger, competitiveness, jealousy, all are forms of ill-will.

Khemasuri explores the theme of anger in Santideva’s Bodhicaryavatara at Sangha Night, Sheffield Buddhist Centre. Excerpted from the talk entitled Gratitude to Everyone given on 15th April 2008. Part of a series on Great Buddhist Texts.

Tantra For the Modern World

From Sheffield Buddhist Centre on Thu, 17 Oct, 2019 - 00:00
Satyajyoti introduces the tantra: Buddhism to set life aflame through deep personal transformation of our direct experience. Out with abstractions and theory, it's time to act 'as if your turban was on fire!' In the words of Sangharakshita, 'making Buddhism respectable is the last thing we should do'. In her introductory talk, Satyajyoti outlines five key principles of Tantric Buddhism and explains the tantric equivalents of the three Buddhist refuges, the Buddha, Dharma and Sangha. The new sangha night theme explores the scary, exhilarating, radical and challenging nature of the true Dharma. Over the course of coming talks we will be forging a Western tantra, translating Vajrayana teachings into 21st Century cutting edge practices. Questions for reflection and discussion: How could you intensify your practice, making it more direct and emotionally charged? Is there a situation this week when it could help to 'act as if you're Enlightened'? Recorded at Sheffield Buddhist Centre on 15.10.19

Five myths about the Abhayaratna Trust

From Abhayaratna Trust on Wed, 16 Oct, 2019 - 16:25

1. That we have central funding from the movement to support Order members;

       We don’t! We’re a separate charity solely relying on your individual donations to help care for individual Order members needing support. We don’t fund institutions or Dharma projects.

2. That we are here to help elderly Order members only;

   Not so! We’re here for Order members of any age who request support. If it appears otherwise, that’s because when we started 11 years ago we imagined it would only...

'Buddhism and World Problems' (The Bi-Tendential Value of Being and The Greater Mandala - Week 3)

From London Buddhist Centre on Tue, 15 Oct, 2019 - 00:00
What if everyone could see the enormity of their potential and be able to grow into that potential? What if those people then created a community... and that community becomes more & more a force for good in the world? Buddhism teaches us that it is possible to transcend the notion that I exist as a fixed and separate entity in the world and in doing so release a force of unbounded, unconditional love. ------------ How do we go beyond the duality of subject and object, self and other, to experience the true nature of reality. Join Jnanavaca and Subhadramati for a five-week drop-in seminar on Dharma Night exploring this vital aspect of Bhante Sangharakshita’s presentation of the Buddha’s teaching.
