Ensuring the sexual, physical and psychological safety of young people and vulnerable adults is an expression of the First Precept: avoiding causing harm; cultivating loving kindness.

Mindful of their responsibilities in this area, over the last four years Triratna's European Chairs' Assembly has been developing its model policies for the protection of children and 'vulnerable adults', sent to every Triratna Centre and enterprise in Europe, and also shared with Triratna Centres around the world.

The 2016 versions were presented to the meeting of the International Council in August and the European Chairs' Assembly in September, along with model ethical guidelines for Order members and centres worldwide. They were very well received by both bodies.

Based on what is regarded as best practice in Britain (where 50% of the Order lives and works), these model policies may be adapted or translated to meet local needs.

Triratna activities for children include family retreats, children's classes and school visits. Many of the Centres running these already had their own child protection policies, but these model policies are designed to ensure clarity, simplicity and common standards.

This is the latest development in a process which began in 2013. The documents are reviewed annually.
